Over Molding

Overmolding is the process of adding an additional layer of material over an underlying material. It is a procedure that melds the high strength and stiffness of continuous fibers with freedom of design and flexibility. This technology overcomes the limitation of stamp forming by combining the two processes. Moreover, the process can be easily automated and is well suited for high volume production.

Eigen Engineering offers the following Overmolding techniques:

  • Plastic Over Plastic– Firstly, a rigid plastic under layer is molded. Then another rigid plastic layer is molded onto or around the first layer. The plastics may differ, but ought to be complementary.
  • Rubber Over Plastic– Firstly, a rigid plastic under layer is molded. Then, rubber is molded onto or around the under layer. This is done so that there is a good grip.
  • Plastic Over Metal- Firstly, a metal is stamped, tooled or formed. Then, it is injected into an injection molding tool and the plastic is molded onto or around the metal. This is done in order to capture metal components in a plastic part.
